## What Molinia is

Molinia is an enterprise data platform with the following core properties:

- **EU data sovereignty**: All data remains within EU jurisdiction, hosted on EU-owned infrastructure in Amsterdam. Not subject to the US CLOUD Act.
- **GDPR-oriented design**: Designed for GDPR alignment — data stays in the EU, the platform ships tenant isolation, full audit logging, an Article 30 Record of Processing Activities (RoPA), and a per-org data residency attestation report. The platform does not claim a GDPR certification; those obligations sit with the data controller (your organisation).
- **Climate-positive infrastructure**: Runs on Leafcloud infrastructure in Amsterdam. Leafcloud reuses waste heat from servers to warm residential buildings — climate-positive through physical heat reuse, not offset purchases or renewable-energy certificates.
- **No vendor lock-in**: Built on open standards (OpenStack); workloads are portable across Azure, AWS, GCP, and on-premises.
- **Unified platform**: One coherent layer for ingestion, transformation, orchestration, metadata management, and governance.
- **Secure by default**: Tenant isolation, RBAC, external secret stores, full audit logging, and data lineage.
- **Declarative / GitOps**: Pipelines and configuration defined as versioned code, compatible with GitHub, Azure DevOps, and GitLab.

## Capabilities (shipped and reachable in the product today)

- **Worksheets and dashboards**: SQL worksheets with charted results pinned to shared dashboards (bar, line, scatter, pie), drag-to-reorder, and auto-refresh.
- **External tables — query storage in place**: Register a table over files already in your object storage and query them where they are, without ingesting a copy. Files under a storage location can be browsed and previewed in the product.
- **Ingest, raw or inferred**: Land the source payload untouched as a medallion bronze layer, or infer the schema during ingest. Formats include CSV, Parquet, text, fixed-width, and XML, plus CDC stream ingestion.
- **SQL transformations and pipelines**: Saved transformations and multi-step cron pipelines with run history, failure alerts, and warehouse wake-on-demand.
- **Time travel**: Query a table as of a past point in time via AT(), backed by automatic snapshots, with a coverage view showing how far back each table reaches.
- **Zero-copy data sharing**: Publish read-only, row-filtered datasets to other organisations; consumers mount and query live data with the filter enforced provider-side.
- **Row-level security and column masking**: Policy-driven row filters and column masking (full, partial, email-shaped) enforced in the query engine.
- **Scripting**: SQL macros and stored procedures, sandboxed JavaScript UDFs, and Python stored procedures.
- **RBAC and service accounts**: Fine-grained roles and privileges, time-limited grants, and scoped least-privilege API keys for pipelines and integrations.
- **SSO and 2FA**: SAML and OIDC identity integration, with two-factor authentication enforceable workspace-wide.
- **Tamper-evident audit log**: Hash-chained audit records with verification, NDJSON/CSV export, a 12-month retention floor, and cold-storage archives.
- **Cost controls**: Per-warehouse cost dashboards, budget alerts, projected end-of-month spend, and monthly usage statements with CSV export.

European enterprise data teams in regulated sectors — finance, healthcare, government, and insurance — for whom data residency and GDPR compliance are non-negotiable. ## Pricing

Usage-only billing — there is no subscription, no seat fee, and no platform fee.

**Compute: €1.25 per credit.** One credit = one hour of an xs warehouse. Warehouses auto-suspend when idle; billing is per minute after a 60-second minimum.

**Storage: €0.12 per GB per month.** No egress fees. Prices are ex-VAT; VAT is applied per the organisation's country.

**Free trial:** Every new workspace gets €200 in credits, valid for 30 days, with no credit card required. Every warehouse size is unlocked during the trial, up to two running at once. That is 160 hours on an xs warehouse, or 20 hours on an l.

**Free floor (after trial):** The workspace stays alive with xs warehouses, one running at a time, two warehouses, and 5 credits a month that renew. Storage on free workspaces is purged after 30 days of inactivity.

## About the name

Molinia is named after *Molinia caerulea* — purple moor-grass, *pijpenstrootje* in Dutch — a perennial grass native to Europe and one of the most common plants on Dutch and north-west European heath, moor, and peat bog. It is deep-rooted, thrives on poor wet ground, and is native rather than imported: the same argument the platform makes for European data.

## Competitive position

Molinia is an alternative to Snowflake and Databricks for organizations that cannot route data through US jurisdiction or hyperscaler infrastructure. Unlike those platforms, Molinia keeps data under EU law by default, runs on climate-positive infrastructure (Leafcloud waste-heat reuse, not carbon offsets), and avoids platform lock-in through open standards.
