Snowflake, Databricks, and most hyperscaler-native data tools are US-incorporated entities. That means the US CLOUD Act can compel them to disclose data held on their platforms — regardless of where the data is physically stored. An EU data-centre checkbox does not solve this.

Warehouse compute runs on Leafcloud infrastructure in Amsterdam. Leafcloud deploys servers as "Leaf Sites" inside apartment complexes and care homes, reusing server heat as residential hot water — displacing natural gas heating. Leafcloud describes their model as "climate-positive European cloud."

This is a physical process, not an accounting exercise. Molinia does not purchase renewable-energy certificates or carbon offsets. The warehouse compute is climate-positive because the heat it produces displaces fossil-fuel heating in the buildings it serves — per Leafcloud's published infrastructure model.

Scope: This claim applies to warehouse compute. The control plane runs on a separate VPS (IONOS, German-owned, EU jurisdiction), which is not part of Leafcloud's heat-reuse infrastructure.

For ESG-mandated buyers and sustainability-focused data teams, this is a verifiable, concrete claim — not a marketing abstraction. Leafcloud publishes their infrastructure model openly.

Where is Molinia data stored?

Can I query data without loading it into Molinia?
Yes. Register an external table over files that already sit in your own object storage and query them in place — Molinia reads them where they are instead of ingesting a second copy, so you keep one source of truth and one storage bill. Browsing the files under a storage location, previewing them, and creating the external table all happen in the product. When you do want data inside a warehouse, ingest gives you the choice between landing the raw payload untouched as a bronze layer or inferring the schema on the way in.
Where does the name Molinia come from?
Molinia caerulea — purple moor-grass, pijpenstrootje in Dutch — is a perennial grass native to Europe and one of the most common plants on Dutch and north-west European heath, moor, and peat bog. It is deep-rooted, it thrives on poor wet ground, and it grows here rather than being shipped in. That felt like the right name for a data platform that keeps European data in Europe. The palette is named after the plant too: caerulea for the blue-green of the leaves, peat for the ground it grows in.
